Engine light on?
It’s one of the most common calls we get. The engine light has come on, but the vehicle still seems to be running fine.
Even if it drives normally, the light means the engine’s computer (the ECU) has detected a fault. It needs a proper diagnosis to find out what’s wrong.
Diagnostics start from $110 inc GST. We plug in our diagnostic tool, read the fault code and track down the issue behind it. Then we talk to you about what needs fixing before any repair work starts.

How a diagnosis works
1. Plug in
We connect our diagnostic tool to your vehicle’s computer. Diagnostics start from $110 inc GST.
2. Read the code
We pull the fault code the computer has stored. It tells us which system the fault is in.
3. Find the issue
We track down the issue behind the code, so we fix the real problem and avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.
4. Talk it through
We explain what needs fixing and give you a quote. Nothing gets repaired until you’ve decided.

What to look for
Signs you need a diagnosis
- The engine light is on, even if the vehicle runs fine
- A DPF or other warning light on the dash
- Loss of power, or the vehicle going into limp mode
- Using more fuel than usual
- The engine running rough
What does the engine light mean?
Your vehicle’s computer has detected a fault and stored a code for it. The light doesn’t say what the fault is. A diagnostic tool reads the code so we can find out.
What is a DPF?
The diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off in a process called regeneration. If it can’t regenerate properly, it blocks.
What is the EGR system?
Exhaust gas recirculation feeds some exhaust gas back into the engine to cut emissions. Over time its valve and passages can clog with carbon.

Diagnostic questions
My engine light is on but the car drives fine. Does it need checking?
Yes. The light means the computer has picked up a fault, even if you can’t feel anything yet. Getting it diagnosed early can stop a small problem becoming a bigger one.
How much does a diagnosis cost?
From $110 inc GST. That covers plugging in our diagnostic tool, reading the fault code and identifying the issue. We then talk you through the repair and quote it before we start.
My DPF light is on. What should I do?
Get it checked soon. Driving on with a blocked DPF can make the problem worse and more expensive to fix. Call us on 03 5824 1022.
Do I need a new DPF?
Not always. We diagnose the cause first, and depending on the vehicle and the fault there are several repair options, which helps you avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.
Why does a DPF block?
Usually because it can’t complete a regeneration. That can come down to how the vehicle is driven or to an underlying fault, which is why we look for the cause before recommending a fix.
